A beloved Annapolis tradition, the annual Hammond-Harwood House Secret Garden Tour will be held for the 22nd year this spring. This special event, scheduled for June 10- 11, 2023, allows attendees to tour gorgeous private gardens in the Historic Annapolis District.
The area between Spa Creek and City Dock contains architectural treasures from Annapolis’ colonial times and houses from the Victorian era and 20th century. Their gardens vary in size from very large to relatively tiny. The gardens are carefully tended with patience and devotion and generally cannot be seen from the sidewalk.
The Secret Garden Tour’s proceeds will benefit the 1774 Hammond-Harwood House and its museum. The exhibit houses a stunning decorative art, furniture, and paintings collection.
Hammond-Harwood House
The Hammond-Harwood House is an outstanding example of 18th Century architecture. Experts consider the home the “Most Beautiful Doorway in America.”
Constructed in 1774 for prosperous farmer Mathias Hammond, the mansion was the last project of William Buckland, an accomplished American architect of the Colonial period. On October 9, 1960, the property was named a National Historic Landmark.
The structure is the last surviving specimen of colonial academic architecture inspired by Andrea Palladio’s I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura (The Four Books of Architecture) (1570). The outstanding condition of the house is proof of the Annapolitans’ commitment to preserving their city’s history and heritage.
