November 16, 2022Part 2 will discuss more pre-winter landscaping ideas and tips.
Prep for Spring Success
Always maintain your perennials until the ground freezes so they will bloom early and often during the spring. Keep watering them until temperatures dip to 40°F. If temperatures rise, resume watering your perennials. Having your lawn fertilized before the first frost will also promote healthy new growth next spring.
Winter Landscape Plants
In contrast to what many believe, many plants are capable of growing, thriving, and blooming in winter. However, this depends on your region, how cold it gets, and the amount of sunlight falling on your garden. The following will summarize the plants that do well in the Annapolis area.
Bushes & Shrubs – Keeping your garden fresh and full in winter, bushes and shrubs are essential elements for landscaping in Maryland. Examples are Baltic Ivy, Boxleaf Euonymus, Centennial Girl Holly, and Winter Chocolate Heather. Requiring little maintenance, these winter garden plants are ideal for framing windows and front doors. Nonetheless, keeping them well-trimmed during the colder months will provide structure to your garden.
Evergreens – Coniferous evergreens are winter standbys. Looking gorgeous all year, they also give your property points of height and centers of attention. Examples are cedar, cypress, fir, juniper, and spruce, which will continue growing taller and fuller each year.
Grasses – Providing texture and height to winter landscaping, ornamental grasses, and other grass-like plants can thrive in winter. Examples are Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass, Silver Scepter Variegated Japanese Sedge, and Variegated Sweet Flag. Providing food and shelter will attract birds and other wildlife to your garden.
Perennials – Standby winter garden plants, perennials will brighten your garden each passing year. Dogwood, pansy, and viburnum varieties will either bloom or produce berries into late autumn or even winter. When spring comes, your garden will once again be blessed by its beautiful blossoms.
